Tome-ishi

Tome-ishi

Inspired by the garden tradition of Tome-ishi—a bound stone signaling a subtle boundary. River stones are wrapped in handcrafted Washi paper and rush grass ties, offering a poetic spatial accent or paperweight.

About
The artisan

Ryuki Sunami

Ryuki Sunami is a next-generation artisan redefining igusa (rush grass) weaving. Inheriting the craft from his grandmother at the age of 20, he stands between preservation and reinvention, elevating tradition into a radical contemporary aesthetic.

His genius lies in his restless cultural curiosity; studying a vast collection of global weaving traditions, he absorbs their essence into his fingertips. His works transcend utilitarian craft, unravelling the deep, dormant time within the grass to infuse modern spaces with a raw, primal energy.
